Short answer: build a first-test landed-cost sheet by listing every known cost separately and marking every unknown cost as pending. Do not treat a supplier unit price as the delivered cost of a product test.

What a first-test cost sheet is for
For a new Amazon, Shopify or import project, the sheet helps a founder decide what still needs clarification before a sample or small batch. It does not predict profit, taxes, platform fees or market demand. Use the currency and quote date shown by each supplier or logistics provider.
| Cost group | Record | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Unit price, MOQ and quoted product version | Quoted or pending |
| Sample/setup | Sample, artwork, tooling or print setup | One-time or unclear |
| Packaging | Box, insert, labels, carton assumptions | Included, excluded or provisional |
| Inspection/handling | Requested checks, repacking or consolidation scope | Confirm scope |
| Freight | Method, destination, shipment weight/volume basis | Quoted or pending |
| Import obligations | Duties, tax and compliance obligations | Verify with qualified local advice |
Use a simple calculation structure
Keep the calculation transparent: known product cost + known one-time cost + known packaging/handling + known freight + applicable confirmed import costs. Divide by the stated quantity only after checking that every cost is for the same quantity and product version. Leave unknown items blank or label them pending; do not replace them with invented percentages.
Questions before treating a quote as decision-ready
- Does the unit price match the material, dimensions and packaging in your brief?
- What is excluded from the product quote?
- Is the freight quote based on actual or estimated carton data?
- Are inspection, labels or consolidation part of the scope?
- Which compliance, tax or marketplace requirements need specialist verification?
Compare the same scope with the supplier quote comparison guide. The first China order budget guide helps turn open questions into a staged decision.

Frequently asked questions
Is a supplier unit price my landed cost?
No. It usually excludes some combination of packaging, handling, freight and destination obligations. Record the scope before comparing options.
Should I estimate unknown costs?
Mark them as pending until a reliable quote or qualified advice is available. False precision can create a worse first-order decision.
Can this sheet tell me whether my product will be profitable?
No. It organizes sourcing-related inputs. Selling price, demand, marketing, returns, taxes and platform costs require separate evidence.
